  • Description: NSN, .36 Caliber, 26 1/2” octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a very handsome rifle, made circa 1850 by Nathan Whitmore, of Potsdam, NY. Whitmore was known for making percussion target rifles, and this example has excellent original browning along the barrel, a small globe front target sight, and turn-screw adjustable rear barrel sight on the top flat. The breech is marked “N. WHITMORE CAST STEEL” on the top flat, and has beautiful color case-hardening on the breech plug and nipple bolster. The lock is lightly engraved with a floral motif that has no further markings, and also has lovely original color case-hardening which carries over onto the gracefully swooping hammer. The lock itself is still tight and fully functional with crisp double-set triggers. The half-length walnut stock has scattered minor handling marks and bruises, and is fastened by a single wedge with plain German silver escutcheons. The underside of the forend has an engraved, rectangular silver panel inlay, and an ivory forend cap that has toned nicely with age. An old, with-the-grain crack is present on the right side running forward from the lockplate. The hooked trigger guard has mild freckling, but the original color case-hardening still shows through, as does the color on the large and ornate patchbox. The rifle is housed in a British style traveling case with circular brass handle, and brass-reinforced corners. The interior has eleven compartments with a new, green baize lining. The accessories include: false muzzle, bullet-starter, bullet mould, powder measure, oil bottle, turn-screw, nipple wrench, mainspring vise, and cleaning rod. One of the compartments has a removable bullet box with sliding lid. The case, although of typical British configuration, is made of maple instead of oak, and may actually be American in origin as well. This is a truly beautiful little rifle, and comes with terrific period accessories. It would make a splendid addition to any collection. Antique
