Maker: Queen Anne Screw Barrel Model: Antique

A truncated form pocket size pistol as shown on page 42 in "The Queen Anne Pistol 1660-1780" by John W. Burgoyne. The pistol has a diagonal measurement of 8 inches and weighs 8 ounces. Smooth bore barrel of .43 caliber with a cannon shaped muzzle. The 3 3/4" barrel has a removable section of 2 3/8". The lock is engraved "Pedley" and the barrel breech shows 2 crowns over 4 crossed sceptres with "Halifax" engraved. The removable section of the barrel shows an area where a lug for removal has been broken off. Walnut stocked with a raised area behind the top tang and 2 "teardrops" behind the lock and side plates. The furniture is brass, with light engraving . A James Pedley is listed in "Gunmakers of London 1350-1850" by Howard L. Blackmore. We quote, "Pedley, James Gunmaker (setter up), former workman of John Hirst, apptd. ordnance armorer, Halifax, Canada, 1761. Still there 1804". The pistol has a chip above at rear of the lockplate and a crack in the forend horizontally under the barrel. A nice example of a Queen Anne period flint pocket pistol. The proofs on the barrel of this pistol are ordnance proofs. This is a very rare pistol having been built in Halifax, Nova Scotia at some time probably in the 1760's. This is a very early pistol as built in Colonial North America especially considering that Halifax at this time was a outpost. A very rare colonial built piece.
