A Type 99 long rifle with 31" barrel showing a bright, excellent bore. The other features are an inverted "V" front sight with side guards, a 3 screw front barrel band, the cleaning rod measures 23 3/4" inches rear barrel band is slotted and has provisions for a monopod, now missing. The swivel is mounted on the bottom as is the rear one with 2 screw base. The rear sight is graduated to 1500 meters and has the "fat" aircraft wings. The mum has been punched with a chisel type tool but is mostly intact. The Type 99 marking is complete and unaltered. Serial number 2053 with a matching number on the bolt and extractor. Drain holes are drilled at bottom and side of the receiver ring. A knurled safety bolt with indicator notch and a cupped steel buttplate. A nice early Type 99 with a 4 digit serial number a no series mark. There is some evidence that the Type 99 long rifle was not popular and only issued at the war's end. See pages 84-85 in "Military Rifles of Japan" by Fred L. Honeycutt, and F. Patt Anthony. The authors state that production started in August 1939 and that low serial numbers are often observed. About 90% blue remains with some thinning. The wood shows some scratches and bruising but most original varnish finish remains. A scarce Jap rifle. FFL or C&R
