Maker: Webley Model: Wedge frame Caliber/Gauge: .44 Cal
These wedge frame guns were made for a short time only, 1857-1859 when they were superseded by the solid frame models. This gun is very similar to that shown in figure 11/37 on page 38 of "Webley Revolvers" by Gordon Bruce and Christian Reinhardt. Particulars of this revolver are a 5 1/4" barrel with 5 lands and grooves in .44 caliber. The rammer is the Kerr type. Frame alignment is by means of 2 upper pins and 1 lower. The top strap is engraved "Chas. Osborne" who was the retailer. Nigel Brown lists a Charles Osborne (est. 1838), a gun and rifle maker as operating at 1 Litchfield St. in Birmingham; probably our man. The gun retains 80% of its original nickel finish and the finely checkered wood grips grade excellent. The compartmented oak case has a green baize lining and contains the following: a single cavity brass mold marked "54" and "W D" casting a round nose bullet with single groove, a 6 13/16" ramrod with dished brass tip concealing a worm ball puller, a pistol size bag flask with no name similar to Riling No. 200, 2 wood handled tools: a small turn screw and a square nipple wrench with a cracked handle, a small round pewter oil bottle and a lacquered tin containing a few Eley Bros. # 10 caps. Also included is the case key. Most of the revolvers of the era were blued; this nickeled piece was probably ordered for an officer who was posted to a tropical area of the Empire. A nice cased Webley revolver. Antique
