Dreyse 15GA. Needle Fire Double Shotgun
Maker: Dreyse Needle Fire Model: Antique
This very interesting needle fire double is marked in gold on the top rib "F.V. Dreyse Sommerda". Dorneve stockel by Eugene Heer lists several Dreyse names but the most likely is found on page 307 "dreyse, Franz Karl Rudolph Von, sommerda, preussen/D, 1822-1894". The gun opens and cocks by means of an underlever which moves the barrel, slightly forward and then pivots them to expose the chambers. 2 extractors sit on the breech top in notches cut into the barrel breeches. When cocked the firing pins protect 7/16 from the back of the breech. Both bores mike .640. The metal has gold, and platinum wire inlay in geometric form and a very heavy horn pistol grip/triggerguard with double triggers. Steel buttplate with light engraving. The underlever shows a silver fox. Walnut stocked with a right hand shooters cheekrest and a checkered wrist. 453/4" overall length and weigh in 7 pounds. Damascus barrels measure 28 3./4" overall with some light bore frosting and some scattered pitting. A very interesting needle fire most likely made circa 1840-50. A great piece that is mechanically sound but needs a detailed cleaning. This could be a great example of a needle fire with some careful restoration to the finish. Antique
