A. English & Sporting Rifle Marked Swinburn's Patent
Maker: Swinburn Martini Model: Antique
The action appears to be a Martini Henry and is marked on the left "Swinburn's Patent" and on the right "Govnt. Cartridge/577/450". and on the top rib the retailer's name "Cope Bros London". Several bits of information about Swinburn rifles may be gleaned from "British Single Shot Rifles, Vol 6" by Wal Winfer. Page 63 states that Swinburn rifles were made at the Abingdon Gun Works in Birmingham in which both J.F. Swinburn and W.C. Scott were major shareholders. The Swinburn sporting rifle was available specially stocked and sold from L7:15 to L. 15:15. Ths rifle is nicely finished with fancy wood, checkered grip and forend, engraved and with an express sight graduated to 1000 yards. There are some small repaired cracks in the area of the top tang and a small crack on the underside at the tail of the bottom tang. Under the sight base on the left barrel is markd "Henry's XP Patent". Engraving is about 70% coverage in a medium scroll style. The forend has a horn tip. The face of the frame is numbered 4982 and under the barrel at the breech has 1 transposed number "46 82" with Birmingham proofs, "Number 52 and 577/450". The stock and barrel have loop type sling eyes for hooks and the stock has another number at back tail of the checkereing "1909" which may have been the retailer's serial number. A steel buttplate has a circular trap door, probably for a multi section cleaning rod. Total weight of this very nice sporting rifle is 7.25 pounds. The frame shows about 90% of the original blue remaining with that missing due to flaking on the right frame. The bottom round side of the barrel appears to have been refinished at an earlier date but not on the top matted area which appears to be original. Nice bright, excellent bore and some fading of the case color shows on the lever. The front sight blade was replaced at some time with a Marble's #4. A fine British sporting rifle of military caliber from the 1870's. An excellent example for those who appreciate fine English single shots and sporting rifles. Antique
