Maker: Box Model: German 08

This piece is what remains of a WW1 machine gun 08 spare parts box included is a letter dated 1989 from Dolf L. Goldsmith a well known expert on the maxim machine gun discussing the item with the former owner and indicating the rarity of this WW1 parts box. The piece is described as a wooden finger jointed box painted over all pea green which measures 11 3/4" long by 5 7/8" deep by 3 3/16" tall. The lid is stenciled , likely in white- although it appears to be a lighter green due to age: "Vorratskasten 17/(MG. 08)". The paint is flaking lightly however the lide stenciling is fully readable. The box features steel rear hinges with hook and eye closures at the front with a woven cloth handle with riveted steel and billets. The interior of the lid shows only a tiny remnant of what was likely an inside label, the interior partititons have been removed but by the position of their screw holes one can surmise the position of the partitions. Te inside of the lid features a partial makers stamp in purple ink 'gebr. Niendorf/G.m.b.H/Hofzin- " of the Niendorf Brothers of a Luckenwalde Germany, a pianao factory that also made wooden goods during the world wars. A very interesting and very rare relic that was likely an armorer's kit for spare parts or tools or both.
