Boer war pipe carved with a date 31 March 1899-1902 Canada, the Canadian Maple Leaf and the name A. Simpson. The book "Boer War Memorabilia" by Pieter Oosthuizen states at page 203 as follows; Pipe smoking was very popular at the turn of the century. As there were not sufficient pipes available in South Africa to meet the soldiers' demands, a number of campaigns were launched in England and a great number of pipes were collected and shipped to the war front. The soldiers, in their leisure time, also carved their names or regimental insignia on their pipes. Pipes have thus become another item high on the collectors lists." The pipe as offered fits squarely into the above description. This piece is not a Canadian style of pipe of the period. It was either acquired there or shipped to Africa. A. Simpson was a Canadian from St. John, New Brusnwick. His full name was Alfred Percy Simpson who served for 15 years in the C.G.A. (Canadian Garrison Artillery) at Saint John NB He was with the 1st Canadian Contingent with the 3rd Canadian Artillery that sailed to South Africa on the 30th Oct 1899. He is listed as SN 7985 with G. Company from New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. (The story of South Africa 1899). Also included is the service record of Alfred Simpson from his service in WWI with the CEF. The record from the 1st war makes reference to his back wound during the South African War. The pipe is an excellent and uncommon piece of Boer War memorabilia. There is an old crack around the center of the bowl. Despite this, a hard to find piece of Canadian Boer War memorabilia which is identified.
