A unique Sharps and Hankins later type army carbine with no provision for leather barrel cover and frame mounted firing pin. This gun is recorded as having been issued to the 11th New York Cavalry Companys B&L. The gun has mixed serial numbers. The markings on both sides of the frame are weak. The 24" .52 caliber rimfire barrel bore shows some pitted areas but has strong rifling. Very good wood with some finish added in the past. Most metal is gray/brown with traces of case color on the lever. A wonderful Civil War survivor that can be traced to two New York cavalrymen. A single tracing to 1 individual is very unusual. Tracing to two individuals virtually unheard of. The safety lever is missing but the screw is still in the frame. Probably the results of a unit armourer creating one usable carbine out of two in the field. 2. The list of issued carbines on page 80 in "Civil War Sharps Carbines and Rifles" by Coates and McAulay shows serial # 2777. This serial # was issued to the 11th NY cavalry and specifically to a trooper by the name of Ringol of Company L. The barrel and toggle shows issue to company B and specifically to a trooper by the name of H.E. Andrews of Co B. 3. The 11th NY was organized in 1862. This unit was involved in several skirmishes. They were also in service in Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. A less than common piece that was there and saw service as a cavalry unit in the civil war. Antique
