In December of 1917 the U.S. ordnance Departmeent placed an order with Winchester for 1800 1894 carbines. We are pleased to offer one of these pieces serial # 837552. These carbines were shipped to the U.S. Signal Corps troops at Vancouver, Washington state. These pieces were then stamped with a US and Ordnance Bomb (individual stamps without periods after the U & S. These carbines were used as guard guns for the troops overseeing the harvesting the Sitka spruce lumber which was essencial material for the building of the WWI military aircraft. The receiver of this carbine is correctly marked with the U.S. markings and flaming bomb. Standard markings and features throughout with nickel steel barrel, gum wood stocks showing 3 holes (one now filled) in bottom of the stock, perhaps for some type of sling. For reference see "Winchester in the Service" by Bruce N. Canfield. Canfield states that the markings are very similar to those found on WWI Model 1897 trench shotguns. He also states that serial numbers fall between 835,000 to 852,000. The acquisition of these new standard weapons was not for front line use but for "home guard" units for guarding vital defense industries, etc. According to ordnance records, 1,800 were ordered shipped to the northwest Canfield describes these carbines as rather scarce today and are usually found in less than excellent condition. "These U.S. marked 1894 carbines are quite interesting and very collectible guns and probably rank among the least known U.S. martial weapons." This example is in well used but unaltered condition. Good bore with strong rifling and some frosting. The Madis book shows photos of two US marked carbines but is devoid of information. The Canfield work which was researched at a later date appears to contain the more accurate information on these scarce U.S. military carbines. In addition see the internet article by Rick Hill WWW.winchester collector.org/guns/w-mil.shtml/ In this article is a list of known serial numbers including this piece SN 837552. A scarce Winchester 1894 for the Winchester or the U.S. military collector.
