Boer War ZAR Model 1896 Mauser Rifle by Loewe w/Carved Stock Published

  • Price: $3,495.00
  • Maker: Mauser
  • Model: 1896
  • Caliber: 7mm

  • Description: Serial #B9179, 7mm Mauser, 29 inch barrel with a fine, bright bore that has mild freckling within the grooves. This is one of the second batch of 10,000 Ludwig Loewe marked, Mauser rifles purchased by the South African Republic (ZAR) in 1896. The metal retains about 75-80% of the original blue, that blends with a mellow plum-brown patina on the balance. Some bright metal remains on the non-matching, but correct bolt, and some original fire blue remains on the magazine follower. A crisp Birmingham proof is present on the left side of the receiver ring, indicating that the rifle was taken to Britain after the war as a trophy/souvenir. The stock was lightly sanded at some point, and has minor handling marks and surface blemishes throughout. A previous owner has carved his name in Boer fashion on the left side of the stock in neatly printed letters: J.H.F. van Rooijen. The rifle comes with a correct cleaning rod, numbered to a different gun. This very rifle is illustrated on pg. 68 of Carvings From The Veldt by Dave George (2004), and is notable in that while there was no JHF van Rooijen listed as captured or claiming the war medal, there were two listed as JH van Rooyen who did claim their medals. In any event, this is a very good example of a rare, Boer-used rifle, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Antique
