British Commercial Pattern 1853 Musket by Williams & Powell

  • Price: $3,995.00
  • Maker: British
  • Model: 1853
  • Caliber: .577

  • Description: NSN, .577 Caliber, 39 1/4” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome, officer’s grade musket that has 95-97% of the original blue remaining on the barrel, which has standard commercial proofs at the breech. There is some mild silvering at the muzzle, and small areas of plum-brown freckling have begun to appear along its length, but these are minor issues. The lock and hammer have simple engraved borders, with the maker’s name ahead the hammer: “WILLIAMS & POWELL / LIVERPOOL / 1860”; and Crown behind. The metal has a smooth gray-brown patina with traces of original color case-hardening still visible on protected areas. The walnut stock has deep checkering on the forend and wrist with scattered minor handling marks and minor blemishes in the dark, original oil finish. The checkering is crisp, and exhibits very little flattening of the points. The brass trigger guard, buttplate, and forend tip have a mellow yellow-ochre patina, while the barrel bands have developed a plum-brown patina. The ramrod is a period, military marked replacement, but is correct for the gun. The action is crisp and firm, and the chained nipple protector is still in place (but is attached to the triger guard by a short loop of fairly modern ball chain). This is a simply splendid example of a commercially-made Enfield rifle-musket, and rates excellent condition overall. Antique
