- Description: This is a roughly conical tin hat box with white painted lettering "Lt. Col. H.L.Smith / 1st E.S. Regt." The remains of a large luggage sticker reads "East Surry Regt. Kinsale, Ireland" on the box body. A smaller railway label fragment reads "G.E.R. / to Liverpool St." The box is nicely made, and features a carry handle, hinged top, and a hasp for a lock. The box measures 17 1/2" high x 12" long x 11" wide with an oval footprint. Henry Lockhart Smith was a long-serving officer in the East Surrey Regiment, serving in the Afghan War, Sudan, and the Boer War. He was mentioned in despatches twice, and was awarded the Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his actions at Pieter's Hill and the Relief of Ladysmith. This hat box dates to his time following the war, when he was commanding officer of the 1st Bn. East Surrey Reg't, and 2nd in command of the regiment as a whole. He retired in 1911, but reentered service during WW1 commanding a Surrey-based service unit before invaliding out in 1915. This is a very fine condition military hat box, that belonged to a much-decorated officer.
