  • Description: This is the July of 1864 pattern for .58 caliber balls, and is a Type 2 example with both outer and inner cover flaps. The black bridle leather is in very good-fine shape with only some minor crazing at the flex points of the cover, and some minor flaking along the edge of the outer cover flap. The inner flap has a makers stamp: "E. METZGER / PHILA."; and US Inspector stamp: "W.H. HARTZELL / US / ORD. DEPT. / SUB INSPECTOR." The tin inserts are both present, the brass closure stud has a yellow-ochre patina, and the shoulder belt buckles still have most of their original black japanned finish remaining. Moderate verdigris is present on the cover and belt loop rivets. Emanuel Metzger was a Philadelphia maker who had numerous Civil War contracts for cap boxes, saddlery, and other leather goods throughout the war. This box would have been one made for one of the three contracts between 1864 and 1865 for a total of 18,000 sets of infantry accoutrements. This is a fine example of a late war US cartridge box, and would make a great addition to any collection.
