  • Maker: Merwin, Hulbert & Co.
  • Model: First Model
  • Caliber: .38 S&W

  • Description: Serial #1863, .38 S&W 3 inch ribbed barrel with a bright, near excellent bore. This is the earliest production model, medium frame, spur trigger revolver manufactured by Hopkins & Allen for the Merwin, Hulbert & Company in New York City made from the late 1870's to the 1880's. This first model featured five shot scooped cylinders and the unique side twist and pull opening mechanism with the distinguishing hole in the cylinder shield for loading. The gun is marked with both the Hopkins & Allen information with Connecticut address on the rib of the barrel and with Merwin, Hulbert & Co. on the frame with New York, U.S.A..The antique pistol is in near excellent condition retaining about 85-90% of the original bright nickel finish on the barrel and frame with most of the loss on the grip straps and rear portion of the frame which shows a freckled appearance. The original hard rubber grips with dog's head have excellent detail with a crack on the bottom of the right scale and a poor repair to the bottom corner of the left. The action functions properly and with tight lock up, proper indexing and crisp trigger pull. A scarce first model in near excellent condition. Antique
