Rare U.S. Marked Priming Horn with Original Leather Strap

- Description: This is a splendid horn that measures approximately 13 1/4 from the end of the spout to the tip of the domed base finial. The body of the horn is in fine-near excellent condition, with some short stress cracks and minor insect damage at the base. The spout is conical brass with a pivoting iron cover, and an integral sling swivel. The wooden base is affixed by four small brass brads, and has a shaped finial around which is looped the original brown leather, US embossed leather strap. The strap itself is lightly crazed throughout, and is still supple, but does have some tearing damage at either end where it attaches to the horn. We suspect that the horn was part of the inventory of Allegheny Arsenal (Pittsburgh, PA) that was sold in the early 1900s. It should be noted that in the 1920s and 30s, Bannermans listed very similar horns, complete with leather shoulder straps, and described them as having originated at Pittsburg Arsenal. This is a truly handsome, US-made powder horn, in excellent condition, and would make a superb addition to any collection.
