US Model 1870 Navy Bayonet by Ames
- Maker: Ames
- Model: Bayonet
- Description: This is the Type II bayonet for the .50 caliber, Model 1870 Rolling Block Navy Rifle, and measures 24 3/4" overall, with a 20 1/8" straight, double-edged blade having 3/4 length central fullers. The steel has an overall mottled gray patina with deposits of dried, protective grease along both sides of the blade. The ricasso has the Ames "Scroll" trademark on the ricasso reverse, while the obverse has "U.S.N. / GGS / 1870" naval markings. The cast brass hilt has an overall yellow-ochre tarnish, and there are numerous scattered handling marks in the scale grip. The press-stud is still functional, and both the "GGS" and "IA" inspector stamps are still legible. The leather and brass scabbard is in very good shape with shallow dents on the throat and chape, and some minor crazing along the black leather body. This is a fine example of a scarce US Navy bayonet.
