Item #41281

US Model 1879 Trapdoor Carbine

  • Maker: Spfld
  • Model: Trapdoor
  • Caliber: .45

  • Description: Serial #188816*, .45-70, 22 barrel with a very good bore that has some mild pitting at the breech. This is a nice looking carbine that has an overall mottled pewter gray and plum-brown patina, along with fairly crisp markings. There are scattered spots of pinprick pitting on the breechblock, which has some muted original color case-hardening on the underside. The lock has thin pinprick pitting as well, and the "C" marked, carbine rear sight is mostly brown. The carbine is equipped with a rifle trigger guard, and the barrel band swivel has been removed. The walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes under an added military oil finish that has left the cartouche indistinct and no longer visible. Additionally, there is a with-the-grain crack running back from the lockplate, as well as a few more at the butt on both sides. The stock compartment is empty. This is a very good original Trapdoor carbine overall that has tight mechanics, a handsome, "Wild West" look, and would make a great decorative accent piece or addition to any collection. Antique
