  • Model: 1866
  • Caliber: .44 RF

  • Description: Serial #36806, .44 RF Flat, 24" octagon barrel with a very good bore that has mild freckling within the grooves, and some areas of darker pitting about midway down. This is an 1870-made rifle that has retained 30-40% of the original blue on the barrel and magazine tube, with some silvering at the muzzle and along the edges of the barrel facets, as well as areas of mild pinprick pitting (mostly along the right side), and a mellow plum-brown patina on the balance. The brass frame, cartridge lifter, and forend cap have developed a lovely yellow-ochre patina, and there are traces of original fire blue on the loading gate. The hammer, bolt, lever, and sling swivels have developed a mottled gray-brown patina over time. The walnut forend and buttstock have numerous small handling marks and surface blemishes in the unsanded wood, and there is a single short, with-the-grain crack at the tip of the top tang. The action is tight and fully functional. The lever screw is stripped and does start to work its way out after cycling the action a few times. This is a great looking Model 1866, with honest wear and without any more recent meddling. It would make a splendid addition to any collection. Antique
